VPP Results
Petite Riviere, NS (09/10/01) -
Since the available Velocity Prediction Programs did not have provisions for the
characteristics of the Aerorig, an approximation was used by assuming a
fractional non-overlapping rig with
poled jib downwind. This study was done prior to deciding the final keel
configuration. Two different keel-centerboard arrangements were modeled,
both with 15000-lbs of ballast: 6.75 ft keel draft with centerboard (up and
down) and a 7.75 ft. keel without centerboard. Based on this study, we
chose the keel-centerboard for it's better upwind performance over the deeper
fixed keel.
Tests performed in the UK at the Wolfson Wind Tunnel of Southampton University
predict a higher level of performance off the wind than that predicted by the
VPP model. With a high performance conventional rig and poled-out genoa,
the Wolfson results indicated
33% more force on the sails from 120° to 180°.
A test of two Beneteau 42s7's
differing only in the Aerorig on one corroborates the predicted performance
advantage or the Aerorig. Even though the boat with the Aerorig had 15%
less sail area, it performed 10% faster upwind and 30% faster off the wind in 10
to 20 knot winds.
